to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Jordan Staal has turned down a 10-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and has told them that he has no interest in any extension at this moment.

Andy Strickland of TrueHockey.com has also reported that Staal has expressed interest in exploring free agency rather than re-signing with the Pens before the end of 2013—the last year on his current contract.

The announcement from McKenzie adds even more fuel to Strickland's report, as well as the plentiful trade rumors about Staal that have been circulating for the past month or two. Some feel that by trading Staal, the Penguins could get what they need (defense) for something that they have too much of (star centers).
