On Thursday morning, a number of media outlets reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins surprised veteran forward Bill Guerin by informing the 38-year-old that he would not be invited back for 2010-11. After making $2 million last year, Guerin posted nine points in 11 playoff games, following a 45 point regular season which included 21 goals. With the veteran hitting the market, there could be a couple of teams with interest despite a relatively slow August in free agency (until the last three days).   Los Angeles Kings Guerin plays right wing, which isn't much of a need for the Kings right now. However, his price ...

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Penguins GM Ray Shero has informed Bill Guerin that the club has decided not to re-sign him for the 2010-11 season. Now  Guerin must now ask himself—is there another team worth playing for? Guerin seemed pretty adamant in recent weeks that his only desire to continue playing in the league seemed to revolve around remaining in a Penguins sweater. With the Pens being about $1.5 million dollars from the salary cap ceiling, there was talk this week that Guerin was willing to take a substantial pay cut to remain in the steel city. It ...

The Penguins have made alot of changes to their roster this summer, especially on defence.  The acquisitions of Martin and Michalek will definately help Pittsburgh this offseason.  This late into the summer their is still a number of big name RFA's unsigned. With the likes of Bobby Ryan, James Neal, Peter Mueller, and Marc Staal, to name a few, still unsigned.  According to Capgeek.com the Penguins have just under 1.5 million dollars in Cap space available. While the need for a top six winger like Mueller, Neal or Ryan is what the Pens would likely be looking for Staal might be the easiest to ...

Welcome back to Baby Penguins Banter! I know I promised I would write this every week, but things have been a little slow this offseason, and would you believe the AHL STILL hasn’t released its schedule (thanks a lot, NBA!)? With the release of the schedule just one day away, it is time to recap some of the latest happenings with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins organization. Here’s what you’ve missed: Hynes Takes Over Following former head coach Todd Reirden’s promotion to Pittsburgh, the Penguins announced that John Hynes would be taking the reigns as Wilkes-Barre’s next head coach. Hynes was the Baby Penguins’ assistant coach last season. ...

The Pittsburgh Penguins dipped into the free agent market yesterday and recruited the services of Arron Asham for the upcoming season. Asham signed a one-year deal with the Pens for 700K. The question most Pens’ fans are asking about this signing is why. To some, this move is highly suspect. Fans obviously see that the most glaring hole in the Pens’ lineup is the lack of a top 6 winger to provide secondary scoring. So it begs the question, what is Penguins GM Ray Shero thinking here? Shouldn’t the priority have been to acquire someone who could provide 20-30 goals this season? ...

The Consol Energy Center, the new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, held its first major event this past week as music legend Paul McCartney performed two concerts to christen the state of the art arena. Open houses have been and will be held for season ticket holders, the construction crews who worked on the building, and the general public. I wish I can say I have seen the new building, but unfortunately, I am five hours away and probably won’t get out there for a few more months. But in the meantime, I wanted to read every article and look at every photo ...

Arron Asham (RW) is a very tough guy. Logging 126 penalty minutes (PIM) gives a guy that type of reputation around the league these days. He works hard on the fourth line and can even do some damage on the third line as he does have a scoring touch (72 games, 10 goals, 24 points last year). These types of players seem like they're worth a dime a dozen. Too bad it's very hard to find players like Asham these days. Especially for the bargain contract he signed today with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Asham signed a one-year contract that is worth $700,000. ...

Over the course of a player’s career, it is almost impossible to not hit at least one major milestone.  Whether it’s the total number of goals, assist, points, penalty minutes or games played, they have different meanings and different impacts on a player’s career.  The Pittsburgh Penguins boast one of the most explosive young rosters in the NHL today.  The added bonus to having that roster is getting to see some of the personal milestones pile up over the course of a few seasons.  The biggest spotlight will be on the Pens’ big three as next season gets underway. Sidney ...

The Pittsburgh Penguins were down 3-0 in Game Seven against the Montreal Canadiens. Despite the score falling in the other team's favor, there was no need for concern. This team dug themselves out of deeper holes in the past. Things started to look up when Andrei Kostitsyn took a roughing penalty four minutes into the second period. While the power play wasn't very successful against the Canadiens, the Pens could always find a way to convert when they needed it, especially after tapping into a power play machine against the Ottawa Senators. But things weren't clicking. Just over a minute into the power play, ...

The Pittsburgh Penguins have two retired numbers hanging from the rafters of the Consol Energy Center: Mario Lemieux's No. 66 and Michel Briere's No. 21.In 2003, the Penguins unveiled a Ring of Honor, which recognizes some of the great players in franchise history without retiring their numbers. That's all fine and good, but what if the day comes when the Penguins decide to retire another player's uniform number?I am not sure if the Penguins Ring of Honor will be present in the new arena (maybe someone can help me out here), but regardless, retiring a player's number is the greatest way ...
